Gustav Mahler Memorial Stone

Like many of "summer visitors" of the time, Gustav Mahler traveled by train and then by ship to his holiday destination Steinbach am Attersee.

Here at the landing dock in Steinbach, Gustav Mahler welcomed his friend Bruno Walter whom he had invited to come for a visit. As Bruno Walter let his gaze wander over the graceful landscape and the rugged cliffs of the Höllengebirge in the background, Mahler said this famous sentence: "Sie brauchen gar nicht mehr hinzusehen - das habe ich schon alles weggkomponiert" ["No need to to look - I have already composed all that away!"] and immediately told him about his rapidly progressing work on the Third Symphony.

Memorial Stone

In 1996, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Third Symphony, a memorial plaque was placed at the landing dock in Steinbach am Attersee.
